ReNe: horton hears a who

Maybe it's been a long, long time since I've read a Dr Seuss book, but somehow this movie didn't seem to give me the impression that it was based on a Dr Seuss book.

To me, a Dr Seuss story is characterized by a lyrical and pithy storytelling style. The words are usually sparse, but accompanied by the beautiful illustrations, the characters lanky and stark, the universe of Dr Seuss is one that is very fantastical and unique. In the movie, I was bitterly disappointed until Whoville was introduced, but still, in my opinion, the entire movie just fell a little flat. Sure, the animation was gorgeous (what animation these days isn't?), but well, the story's fairly insipid. And the real Dr Seuss, to me, is not about full-color and Disneyesque animation; it's reds and blues and blacks and whites and little else, and stretched, scraggly characters.

Maybe if the movie had focused more on Whoville than the jungle of Nool... maybe if they didn't bother with that 'let's all forgive and forget' scene at the end... maybe if the animation actually followed the outlandish illustration style of the Dr Seuss books...
