ReNe: the body bakery

At his 'Body Bakery', Thai artist and baker Kittiwat Unarrom sells unbelievably realistic looking sculptures made from bread. Yes, they're edible. Go read this article.

I think the movie industry should hire this guy -- bread is probably cheaper, and definitely more environmentally friendly, than using latex to made corpses and dismembered parts.

ReNe: san zhi and darvaza gas crater

A couple of really cool things I read about recently.

San Zhi, an abandoned vacation housing complex outside of Taipei, Taiwan. Time of abandonment varies with google searches, anything from 1960s -1980s. Even so, it is very apocalypse-cool. I can very well imagine them as abandoned futuristic buildings after some nuclear war in a future, as some plot in an anime. One post with pictures: part 1 - part 2
Another good pix article.

The Darvaza Gas Crater:
In 1971 a search for gas went wrong when a whole drilling rig fell into an underground cavern. Natural gas started coming up from the hole. It was set alight so it wouldn't kill everything around. For 35 years now the flames keep burning providing an spectacular scene for tourists. At night the burning gas makes the crater seen from miles away. The crater is located in Turkmenistan in the heart of the Karakum desert. The crater is called Darvaza or The Burning Gates.
