ReNe: waterfront trail

On the weekends, when the weather permits, we go cycling. Last Saturday, we went down south to Ontario Place, and then along the waterfront trail to the Humber Bay Bridge before turning back, a round-trip of about 22km.

Compared to Singapore, Toronto has more bike-friendly policies. There are bicycle lanes drawn on some roads, and motorists here are generally much more tolerant of cyclists; there are even explicit signs at junctions telling motorists to give way to cyclists. For many people here, the bicycle isn't just a leisure sports equipment but a commute vehicle, and there are many posts and bicycle racks along the sidewalks for cyclists to chain their bikes to. Plus, winter aside, the weather here is also cooler and more conducive to cycling than the soup that is Singapore's weather.

Despite good intentions and bike-friendly policies, the roads here suck. After a long winter, the roads are uneven, cracked and full of potholes. Moreover, cars are often parallel-parked at the curb-sides, thus reducing the number of lanes by one, and one constantly has to keep an eye out on the right for cars moving out, and on the left for cars aiming for a parking spot. At some major junctions, where TTC streetcar tracks cross, it can be especially jarring.

From the western entrance to Ontario Place. From here, we continued along the waterfront, towards the windmill.

A windmill. As there is only one, I think this is more for demonstration purposes, and does not really contribute power to the grid.

Humber Bay Bridge, which was a distance beyond the windmill.
